All walls start with the planning & design!

Two types of wall systems are common in Tucson, conventional and a post tension.
Wall Starting Point- Pick out where your wall will go, length and height. Pick out type of block construction- Fence Block, Conventional CMU or Slump Block (see above header "block" then sub-sections under that for products-see header "more" wall photo ideas for job photos). Pick Color / colors and any upgrades like a color accent or split face accent. Get any necessary engineering for the location, which will at a minimum need to know, the height of wall and type of block you choose and either location or soils condition. From that your professional can determine wind loads, footer requirements, rebar requirements for footer and verticals, concrete strength minimum for footer, grout requirements and additional reinforcement and permit costs.  Be sure you have HOA blessing if applicable. We suggest it's both a  polite and smart move to discuss with neighbors your wall while still in concept stage. We have often seen with neighbors on good terms with each other, split costs on a common wall. STRONGLY RECOMMENDED you have property surveyed to ensure it's your wall and not going to be the City, County or Neighbors wall.  MANDATORY to have all excavation areas be cleared of possible underground utilities BEFORE any CONSTRUCTION -by calling
BLUE STAKE at 811 in Arizona  or at http://www.azbluestake.com/project-designers/. This one contact should provide all utility providers your request.
As you can tell from the above- most masonry walls are best left to the professionals, but you     can have the majority of choices above narrowed down so the quoting process will be smoother.
test
Footer- The most important wall consideration. Depth and width determined by load factors
When Grade slopes, elevation breaks are needed to prevent concrete all running to bottom
Qty and size of rebar is determined by load factors. On post tension application shown, more rebar is typically used. This footer is extra large because this portion will be earthen retaining wall.
Once footer is dug & rebar is placed and secured, its ready for concrete. Usually height set by string line but in this installation was done over rebar over footer
Where chute of ready-mix truck cannot reach, its either wheel barrow or use a concrete pump.
Concrete pump supplying concrete for footer. Note use of boards to hold back concrete from running down footer
rebar holding boards will be pulled out before concrete is fully set
This is a post tension wall, so precise placement of vertical stainless steel threaded rods are being set.
The first course is the most important, both for bonding in and being level. Mortar is spread on footer to start the wall.
Post tension is achieved by placing plates over the vertical threaded rebar, which has been hooked onto the horizontal rebar in footing. Then threading and tension the nut.
Note corner posts used to position string lines, which block is then laid to.
Mortar joints need to be stuck, this helps the bond as well as for aesthetics.
Horizontal reinforcing wire being placed
Retaining wall portion, completed, now post tension being added for the wall.
